It has been almost 8 years since Chris and I took a trip alone together. I vaguely remember I was very pregnant and we enjoyed a stroll on the beach and relaxing by the pool before Evie was born. We had planned our first trip away for our 10th anniversary last year that was postponed due to COVID. This was going to be our year.
We opted for a trip to St. Augustine. We stayed in a cute little AirBnB private room above a residence. The bedroom window looked right out to the water in the east. I watched the beautiful sunrise every morning and then went back to sleep. We visited some cool eateries and attractions. If you are planning a trip that way, these are my recommendations.
Food
We had our first breakfast at Le Petit Pleasures. It was a cute little French bakery that is open for breakfast and lunch. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the pasty display. I will get better at pictures! Chris ordered a turkey and brie croissant which I can confirm is delicious. He also got an eclair, which is too sweet for me, but he enjoyed it. I had a quiche Lorraine and took my chocolate croissant to go. Both amazing! We came back for my favorite tiramisu for dessert. Also amazing and it was huge. We could finish it together.
We had one of our lunches at the Thai House and Sushi Bar. Sushi is one of those things that we enjoy having when we are not sharing our meals with children. They had a nice outdoor seating area which was comfortable for us to keep our distance from other tables,
There were so many other little places we wanted to try so we did a day where we ordered just one thing from multiple places to share. First a breakfast meat pie from Kookaburras. As an Australian, I remember enjoying a meat pie often. I have not had one since I was a little girl. I can’t say if it is the same, but it definitely did deliver. It was so tasty. I want to have another the next time we visit.
We had the rest of our lunch at the grilled cheese gallery. I enjoy good grilled cheese, but what really made me want to visit was the giant unicorn they had outside. They had so many varieties of grilled cheese to choose from. It was so hard to choose. We went with a simpler one, which was a delicious quartet of cheeses. They even give you dipping cups with homemade tomato soup to dip your grilled cheese into. I do not like tomato soup, but it was delicious.
We took snacks for the road by visiting Mimi’s Famous crepes for the tastiest Nutella and strawberry treat. And right next door was Ben’s soft pretzels for some pretzel bites. Both were yummy, but I am still really craving that crepe!
Attractions
We spent our morning on the beach at Anastasia State Park. It was amazing how flat and long and straight it was. There was barely a soul on it too. We walked a mile in one direction and then back and collected many shells. I also found my first sand dollar. The where lots of trails at this state park which I hope we can come back to explore.
To see the most of St. Augustine at once, we took a tour on the Old Trolley Tour. The tour gave you history and told of many places to stop. It was nice to jump on and off it as we wanted to. We stopped for pictures in a few different places that we hope we can go back and see on one of our future trips. We stopped outside the fort, but did not go in this time. We visited it about 5 years ago and will go again with both girls. We also took the St. Augustine Boat Tour and saw the sights from the water. We even spotted some dolphins
One of the stops we took was to go into the Potter’s Wax museum. I have never been to a wax museum. It was crazy how realistic the creations were. We saw some of our fictional characters as well as many historic people too.
Another place we visited was the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum. See all the cool pirate tools, some manuscripts and even pretend to sail a ship indoors. Be careful, you might run into some pirate skeletons!!
