This year our little co-op started a book club. I was so excited for this idea because I love books and all the things you can learn and enjoy from them. Best of all, we get to enjoy this with our friends.
The first book we decided was a nice, easy and quick chapter book, Mercy Watson Saves the Day by Kate DiCamillo. She has written a lot of chapter books, including Because Of Winn-Dixie. Evie just completed this book on her own and we had a movie date together. She loved that this was an author that she had just read. She was unsure of the book club, because she likes to do everything independently and wanted to finish the book in a day. With book club, we are learning that though it is great to do things alone, it’s important to wait and work with others also.

I was prepared to create my own discussion question and projects, but when I checked, it was already available on the internet. It is one of my favorite things, to find the things already made and shared, because believe it or not, I don’t have all the time in the world to make all the things! I used the discussion questions from My First Book Club and added my own discussion questions like what makes you feel warm inside?, What is your favorite snack that a friends shared with you?, Who do you think is responsible for saving the Watsons?
One of the projects I did make was a character trait image of toast and butter to attach to a pig outline. On the little butter squares, we wrote down some of Mercy’s character traits.
Some of the other things we did was enjoy buttered toast for breakfast while we read. It would have been fun to make sugar cookies. We have learned that snacking during read alouds is always fun!

If you are looking for a great chapter book for a reader who is just getting into chapter books, this is a great place to start. There are 6 books total in this series and I have already been asked to get the rest of them because Mercy is one funny pig.
